I Thought You Were Home
PRAM, is a lonely young man because since middle school his father died, and his mother is busy working. Pram also fills his days by playing music and composing songs. Pram is still in college, but because he wants to be a musician, Pram goes to college while working at a music cafe. The music cafe has a good branding on music, so whoever performs at that cafe, that person is worthy to be called a singer or musician. That’s what Pram is planning to achieve, to become a musician who will be recognized and appreciated by many people. For this purpose, Pram is willing to study while working, even though basically Pram has no economic difficulties. But up to this point, Pram hasn’t received any appreciation from music lovers yet as he had hoped for.
At his university, Pram gets to know NISKALA, a girl who in Pram's eyes is a unique and attractive person filled with charm. Niskala is Pram's junior in campus, and since their first meeting, she has stolen Pram's attention. Pram's meeting with Niskala takes Pram on a new journey of his life, which is more cheerful and more colorful, and not as quiet as before. Niskala is like a beautiful flower in the middle of the thicket of his life. Especially after Pram found out that Pram had seen Niskala before when Niskala was playing at her best friend's house, OKTAVIANUS. But one thing that Pram didn’t know at that time was; Niskala is suffering with bipolar.
Niskala's mental disorder has been detected since Niskala was still a child, and it was Oktavianus who knew about it, because Oktavianus is Niskala's best friend since childhood. That's why Niskala's parents, DEDI and MELA were very protective of Niskala, that’s because they were worried that Niskala would experience unexpected things and endanger herself due to having bipolar disorder. So, since Niskala was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Dedi forbade Niskala from going to school and leaving the house. Niskala continued her studies through home schooling. Niskala also felt trapped in her life, and she needs to take certain drugs if her bipolar relapses.
Niskala didn't want her bipolar disorder to put even more pressure on her, so Niskala went to college discreetly without her father's knowledge. Mela, who has allowed Niskala to go to college, made some rules and certain deals with her. Niskala's goal by going to college was to prove to her father that even with her illness, Niskala would still be able to excel. Only Mela and two of Niskala's friends, Oktavianus, and DINDA know about this. With such condition, Niskala has very limited space to move, because they are all worried about Niskala's bipolar disorder which can relapse at any moment without knowing the place or situation. It was Dinda and Oktavianus who received a mandate from Mela to look after Niskala, because Mela assumed that only the two of them could protect and understand Niskala.
But since Pram became close to Niskala, Niskala's life changed. Niskala violated all the rules and her promises that she made with Mela. Pram feels that Niskala is able to fill his lonely days, and can even support him in music. Niskala begins to move away from her two friends, Dinda and Oktavianus, because she feels that she has found a pleasant home in her life, that is Pram. One day, Pram accidentally got a chance to perform at the cafe with Niskala. On the stage, Pram and Niskala sang a duet and wowed the audiences. Everyone didn’t expect that Pram and Niskala's performance to be that great. Pram's duet with Niskala also received a tremendous appreciation.
Since then, Pram and Niskala often practice singing outside the cafe. Pram also invites Niskala to Pram's house, here Niskala finally found out that Pram is such a lonely person. In a house that huge, Pram is alone. Slowly, Pram's presence began to change Niskala. Niskala, who was initially diligent in studying and focused on her college, is now starting to fall behind. On the other hand, Niskala's presence in Pram's life is like rainwater that falls on a dry land, reviving the silence of Pram's soul. Pram feels that Niskala is the only person who is valuable in his life.
Pram's days are almost always with Niskala, and Niskala also feels that her life is very exciting and challenging with Pram. Niskala's initial goal, and why she had to go to college discreetly, was slowly being eroded. And this has led to various problems, both for her family, as well as for both of her best friends. Niskala feels as if the world has changed and she is liberated from her mental illness, she’s free to choose her life path, which was previously boring.
Niskala ignored Oktavianus’s and Dinda’s persuasion, making her two best friends very sad. Even if they were just reminding Niskala. Pram finally found out that Niskala has a mental illness, which is bipolar. But Pram doesn't want to stay away or leave Niskala, in fact, he actually loves Niskala even more. Thus, Mela and both of Niskala's best friends let Pram and Niskala decide for themselves. Now, in Pram's life there is only Niskala. Knowing Pram's attitude, Niskala deepens her feelings for Pram. Niskala thinks that Pram's attitude is an act of his deep love for her.
But in the midst of Pram and Niskala's close relationship, Niskala felt another turmoil from Pram that she has just realized. It seems Pram is only thinking for his own benefit to become famous. Niskala doesn't want Pram to control her even further. Niskala rebelled herself, which made Pram overwhelmed because Pram really needed Niskala's presence, both for his career and for his life. Pram was angry with Niskala's assumption, although in the end Pram realized that being angry with Niskala was also a mistake. Pram finally tried to make peace and accepted it, and later finds a way to get close to her and have a duet with Niskala again. Pram's attempt was successful.
Pram and Niskala then got a fixed schedule to fill the slot at the music cafe. They also performed together again, but that made their problems even more complicated. Especially after Niskala's father Dedi found out about it. And in the end, everything went chaotic. As a parent, Dedi only thinks about how to make Niskala be able to live her life without encountering any danger, or without causing problems for what Niskala is suffering on. However, Pram and Niskala could not comprehend Dedi's thoughts, because they’re blinded by love and by their increasing popularity. So due to these two different principles, it caused an massive explosion of rejection. Pram couldn't accept it, Niskala couldn't accept it, and Dedi couldn’t to either. So as a result of this clash of principles, it led to an end which they never have wanted.
Niskala understands how lonely Pram's life is. Pram also understands that Niskala's boredom with her mental disorder will never end. They both tried very hard to understand each other, but fate tell them otherwise, no matter how hard Pram and Niskala wanted to achieve their dreams together.

I made "I Thought You Were Home" Because I feel close to mental health issues that I will present in my feature debut. From the beginning, I wrote this scenario with the Sinemaku Pictures team, Mr. Monty Tiwa and Mas Imam Salimy, we agreed that this Kukira Kau Rumah film is a tabulation form or can also be considered as a collection of stories from our friends.
where more and more of our friends are brave enough to speak up about their mental health. I am also very grateful for the extraordinary energy of the crew and cast.
