Private Project

IOV (violet)

The "IOV" project (from the greek violet/form/figure and the opposite of VOI (YOU) word sets in italian fascism to indicate the individual) was born from the necessity to tell the story, depending almost totally on the strength of the imagery, of an event unknown to most. This short film describes the last moments of life of one of the crew of the airship “Italia”,in 1928, a pioneer, together with his fellow countrymen, on an expedition to the deep Arctic. The whole is shaped by a visual and aesthetic directorial language that aims to give depth to a screenplay that is in part consistent with actual events, and in part invented. The idea comes also from a reading of "Shipwreck with Spectator" where Hans Blumenberg explores the sublime pleasure of a drowning man resting on dry land split the stormy sea and is happy how he managed to survive this tragedy unlike others who still live travails and sufferings, as well as us, castaways of the fascist period we observe from a distance, and sometimes with pleasure. The project develops following the imagined final moments of the character that the director explores with an introspective eye through a direction that moves between “seen and not seen” with which he recounts the metaphoric condition of certain common objects that , at the end, become the last sacred totems of a journey. The elements that he finds on his path act, therefore, as a support for the protagonist, who fights to come out of the whiteout, in a sublime vision of grand virtuosity and expressive challenge. Finally, visually, the emotional goal of the film is to trigger a paradoxical sense of pleasure in observing “stepmother” nature who with her beauty consumes the human being.
