IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE

It’s a great paradox that for meeting out the drinking water requirement of more than 2 crore population of national Capital Delhi, water is being fetched from a distance of more than 300 kilometer from Giri river in Sirmour district of Himachal. That too at the cost of displacement of about 2500 families of 25 villages living on the both banks of river Giri for their livelihood. Again, Himachal will soon witness displacement like Bhakra and Pong Dam and oustees will be left at their fate to run from pillar to post for shelter and livelihood. The debut documentary film of Mela Ram Sharma "IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE" brings forth the travails and lurking danger of displacement of the innocent and peace loving people of the villages which will be submerged in the dam. While portraying the sufferings and painful displacement of the affected families, the film also dwells on the deep nuances attached with the cultural moorings of the area and a civilization that took centuries to develop and establish its distinct identity. It's true that government has disbursed compensation amount to the oustees but the question of their resettlement and livelihood remains to be answered for which government seems to be highly insensitive and unconcerned. Numerous interview of affected families narrate their stories of grief which has stepped into their doorstep and they all are living in an atmosphere of fear and danger. The film raises many questions like the identity crisis and havoc being wreaked on the rich cultural and socio economic society with no ray of hope in the end of the dark tunnel of displacement.
