I Modé Meté Modé
I modé meté modé focuses on the neural pathology of glossolalia: the unintelligible speaking of elements from languages other than the patient's, existing or invented, which is observed in states of hypnotic trance and in certain severe mental disorders. The painter Hélene Smith used this manifestation to communicate with supposed inhabitants of the planet Mars, as published by the doctor of Medicine, Théodore Flournoy, in the volume 'From India to the planet Mars: A study of a case of somnambulism with glossolalia' (1899), after attending Smith's sessions in 1894. This manifestation can also be observed in flamenco singing from the southern regions of Spain. This audiovisual piece links these two experiences
