I Get To Be Sad In Beautiful Places
Since graduating art school I've found life to be very uncertain, as I know a lot of us do. In these emotionally de-stabilising times I find myself returning to familiar nature places which hold this grounding space. I began documenting myself experiencing the magic of these places, by filming on my phone. (I find myself crying in the videos and wonder if perhaps this then becomes something performative?) I found that I had not only recorded the beauty of the surroundings, but also captured an intimate experience. Influenced by 'slow film' methodology, the film offers to extend this meditative space to the audience. The video is composed of four static wide shots and their accompanying audio, each lasting around a minute. Recorded between September '22 and March '23, at locations in Germany, Scotland and Ireland. I find it comforting that 'at least I get to be sad in beautiful places.'
