Director Statement

During my junior year of college, I was tasked with creating a film thesis; a project meant to demonstrate the knowledge and skills I have acquired in my undergraduate experience thus far. Despite being in a film program for three years, I had never written a script or directed a film with actual actors or dialog. I wrote "I Dream in Color" as I was testing the boundaries of my own creative potential while doubting that potential at the same time. The sentiment behind the film was born out of all the fear and insecurities I held around filmmaking itself. One could say this insecurity was a learned trait. A central theme in my own experience as a woman is the push and pull between being a lover and being an artist. Generation after generation in my family has witnessed mother, wife, daughter, and sister sacrificing their natural artistic inclination for the sake of domesticity. In a way, "I Dream in Color" is my way of reckoning these ancestral frustrations. The character Margaret is a microcosm of all the dreams that were ignored by the woman in my life and a reminder to myself of what happens when you deny your inner artist.
