Tommy Meisel is an Armenian American filmmaker based in Seattle, Washington. In 2022 he wrote and co-directed the short film “Waiting for Cleo” produced by Northwest Film Forum. “I Am Still Right Here” is his first independent short film project. He is currently working on several upcoming short films, both narrative and documentary. His dream project is an adaptation of the Armenian fairy tale “Rose-Maiden.”
I am honored to share the story of my grandfather, Garo Sarian. In talking with him and learning about his life, a common thread became clear - his compulsion to make a better life for himself and the people around him. He left his home in Lebanon because he felt he “should have [a] good life,” and he worked tirelessly to achieve that. Proudly framed in his living room is a letter of commendation from his manager. It describes how Garo started bringing in an extra lunch every day to give to a fellow employee he noticed was struggling. It didn’t matter that he had never met this person before or that he himself was on a fixed income. Garo saw a way he could help someone, so he simply did it. Perhaps that single act is the best description of Garo Sarian the immigrant, business owner, husband, father, grandfather, and person.
