Hyunjin Lee is an independent filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She studied Journalism at Korea University in South Korea and earned her Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.
Hyunjin began her career in Seoul, where she created her first short film and documentary. Her acclaimed short documentary, No Decision, which focuses on the relationship between a former boxing world champion and his mentor, garnered recognition in Seoul, Italy, and the U.S., winning multiple awards at various film festivals. Since then, her work has explored personal relationships against the backdrop of broader societal themes. After relocating to the U.S., she diversified her filmmaking to include drama, comedy, thrillers, and music videos. Her 2021 short film, Cross, received international acclaim, winning eleven awards and earning six nominations, including recognition from the FLICKERS' Rhode Island International Film Festival. The Virginia Emerging Filmmakers Festival praised the film, awarding it in seven categories, including Best Drama and Best Director, noting its impressive reception with a sold-out screening at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester.
Hyunjin is heavily influenced by South Korean filmmakers such as Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan Wook, and Lee Chang Dong, and draws inspiration from Martin Scorsese, Ari Aster, Gus Van Sant, as well as international directors like Hirokazu Koreeda, the Dardenne brothers, Andrea Arnold, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Xavier Dolan.
