William North is a filmmaker originally from Sheffield now residing in London. He draws most inspiration from his own life, tracking the way social shifts impact the minutiae of everyday activities.
He previously lived in Sicily, San Sebastián and Barcelona and traveled through most continents. While North’s work is, at the time of writing, all set in England, that doesn’t mean that all the cast of characters must be, to do so would not be reflective of the England that North sees all around him and the friends he has from all around the world.
Overall North’s work presents a modern view of England, aiming to grapple with modern life and issues using a variety of means; from experimental approaches to comedies and slightly more conservative takes in the form of dramas.
I was stuck and frustrated editing another project that I shot on DV. I was looking through my camera reel and came across these shots (I had initially intended to use them for something but they fell to the wayside) and got carried away by experimentation.
I wanted the transition where we zoom out from her mouth to be a slight tribute to a particular scene in Tampopo as that is a film that I and Hye-Lynn love.
Regardless of how successful this film is as the finished product, through making this little film I felt a vast amount of freedom allowed by the lack of expectation. It was the first film where I felt I could experiment and indulge in things that I enjoy; limited animation, color shifts and chaotic soundscapes.
