Hurricane María & The Ame-Rican Dream

Imagine living through a direct hit from a Category 5 hurricane - an
event that would change your life forever. You would have to leave
everything you know behind to start over in a new and unfamiliar
place. What would you do? What challenges would you face?
How would you survive and provide for your family?

Prepare to embark on a journey with one Puerto Rican family who
shares their personal story of survival and triumph after enduring
Hurricane María, a storm that devastated the island of Puerto
Rico in 2017 and displaced 135,000+ residents into the United
States mainland. Experience the transition of Alex, Leyra and their
daughters, Girellys and Adriana Díaz. We travel with them over a
two-year period, from the moment María makes landfall on the
island and through the chaotic aftermath left by the storm, which
ultimately leads to the family’s difficult decision to leave their
home in Puerto Rico and move to Florida.

Through the eyes of the Díaz family, we learn the struggles of
assimilating to life in the continental U.S. when obstacles, such as
language barriers and cultural differences, stand in the way. What
does the idea of the “American Dream” look like for someone in
these circumstances and what does it take to pursue that dream?
Is the American Dream attainable for Puerto Ricans - and other
Latin-American migrants alike?
