After graduating with honours from St. Clair College's Musical Theatre Performance program, Courtney spent two summer seasons in Dawson City, Yukon performing as a world renown Gertie Girl at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Casino. Shifting her focus from theatre to film and television, she began to build her body of on-camera work with roles on Suits, Murdoch Mysteries, 12 Monkeys, Becoming Burlesque, Lost Girl and Reign.
By getting involved in ACTRA's Young Emerging Artist’s Assembly, Courtney had the opportunity to take charge of the producing duties of a variety of projects for other members. This along with her experience in front of the camera, opened the doors to crafting her own stories behind the camera as a director, and writer.
Since developing her production company, Deelen with Trouble, Inc. with her partner Michael T. Burgess, they have successfully completed multiple short films, two PSAs, a concept trailer, a music video, and 3 commercials since DwT’s inception in 2015. Courtney was hired by the Canadian Film Centre to produce their 2018 Actors Conservatory Series showcase, and has been a faculty member of St. Clair College for the past two years. Most recently, Courtney was a finalist of the 2018 Cayle Chernin Awards, and the 2019 TAWC Short Film Creation Lab.
DwT’s first short film, How Not To Look For Love, was in the official line up for the Toronto International Short Film Festival, and her self produced and directed short films Hunter’s Chance, and The Last of Ian Campbell will be debuting on the 2019 film festival circuit.
Thank you for watching our film, and sharing the journey of these characters with us. Bringing this story to life was a phenomenal experience, and I couldn't be more proud of what we accomplished.
As a director, when you say that you want it to feel like 'Winters Bone', but you can't get your lead actress until mid-April... if it's meant to be, the universe will provide!
You WILL get what you ask for, but it definitely does not come without a cost. While providing a perfect landscape for our actors to get lost in, shooting during an overnight ice storm has it's own set of unexpected challenges. A perfect metaphor for Hunter's Chance. Although our hero is fiercely determined to do whatever it takes for a fresh start, she has no idea of the challenges that will inevitably stand in her way.
Hunter's Chance is a roller coaster from beginning to end, yet under it's raw and gritty exterior, beats the heart of two lost characters looking for a purpose.
