Lakaaysha van Ewijk, born in 1998, is a Dutch Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist with Surinamese, and Ugandan roots. She is currently pursuing a Fine Arts degree at the University of the Arts, Berlin, recently accepted into klasse Steyerl.
Lakaaysha's artistic practice explores diverse narrative forms, blending contemporary life with reimagined visual experiences. Her work spans video, film, animation, collage, and various other artistic mediums. She is passionate about storytelling and is deeply influenced by multiple film theories, including Japanese, European, queer, and black feminist perspectives.
"Human vs Nature vs Human vs Nature; and so on" is an experimental short film that serves as a visceral portrayal of the ongoing battle between human development and natural preservation. In this work, I endeavor to encapsulate the relentless, often reckless, pace of human-made modernity and its impact on the resilient, yet increasingly besieged, natural world.
Through a series of contrasting visuals and narratives, the film crafts an escalating tension that reflects our current ecological crisis. It is not just a story but an experience designed to plunge the viewer into the midst of this cyclical conflict, urging them to contemplate the legacy of human actions on the environment.
As an artist deeply concerned with environmental issues, I aim to use my work to challenge perceptions and provoke thought. This film is an invitation to the audience to consider the poignant questions about our role and responsibility in the natural world's fate. It's a call to introspection and, hopefully, a catalyst for change.
In creating "Human vs Nature vs Human vs Nature; and so on", I have not only sought to explore these themes but also to innovate in how stories about them are told. The film's experimental nature allows for a unique narrative flow, one that breaks from traditional storytelling to better echo the complex and often non-linear realities of environmental issues.
