How Much is the Bite?
As part of the exhibition "Coordenadas Móviles: Redes de colaboración entre mujeres en la cultura y el arte (1975-1985)", presented at Museo Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Georgia Horgan was invited to make a work in response to the documentary Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti, by Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen.
The resulting work was How Much is the Bite?, a film that operates around the binaries presented in Wollen and Mulvey's documentary: the personal and political; roots and movement; inside and outside; wounds and beauty; and subsequently, how they intertwine.
The narrative follows a young woman and her friend on a journey to Texas, where they source an endoscope to carry out a mysterious experiment. The story is located somewhere between fiction and documentation, creating real scenarios to tell an imagined story. Landscapes are scrutinized from the view of an endoscope, while the bodies are captured by a CCTV lens. Heads and bodies are always separated, cut off by necks or faces staring into the lens. This series of binaries references motifs in Modotti and Kahlo's work: medical equipment, landscapes, industry, piercing stares, and faceless subjects.
These images are, however, united by the film's constant, highlighting an omission in Mulvey and Wollen's documentary: the friendship between two women.
