Director Statement

The story of the film is inspired by an event that took place on the night of April 19, 2009 in the Czech town of Vítkov, near the town of Bruntál where I live. Coexistence with the Roma is still a debated issue in our region, and there are repeated racist insults, if not attacks on Roma. On the other hand, since I was a child, I have not avoided conflicts with Roma, and I have been attacked or robbed several times. As part of the preparation for the film and searching for actors, I began regularly visiting the part of town where most of the Roma people from Bruntál live. I met with people who had been right there at the Vítkov incident. I became friends with a local pastor who helped me develop the script, invited me to Romani cultural events and advised me on the selection of actors from their locality. Out of these experiences came my graduate film, Home No. 45, almost three years later.
