After a successful first year in 2019 which saw 500 entries, the HORSHAM FILM FESTIVAL is back for 2020!

Taking place over 2019 with the awards show in February 2020 we are looking for short film entries to wow us!

The Horsham Film Festival is open to all skill and budget levels. The Judges will not be looking at equipment used, rather criteria such as: storytelling, shot selection, acting ability and use of location.

The film festival has Over 18s and Under 18s age groups and has four categories for films to be entered into – Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Animation and Best Documentary. Plus, the special “Your District” award will be presented by the judges to the films which were filmed in the Horsham District and best showcase the Horsham District, its people or culture.

The nominees will be celebrated at Horsham’s very own Oscar-style Awards Show at The Capitol Theatre, Horsham on February 13 2020 - it promises to be a night of glitz and glamour!

The judging panel includes Silvertip Films founder Geoff Cockwill, producer of Downton Abbey, Chris Croucher and editor of The District Post, Davey Pearson.

Does what it says on the tine – we want to see the funniest, wackiest, most off the wall entries to make us laugh!

Move us, thrill us and maybe even scare us…this category is storytelling at it’s best. It’s the category that’s open to interpretation. We want to see anything that isn’t an out and out comedy in here.

Celebrate the Horsham District with us! Do you know a person, a place, a group or an activity that lives, works or takes place in the district? Tell us about them, bring their story to life.

We love animation whether its hand drawn, stop motion or computer generated. Make it out of pixels, paint, Lego, plasticine or pencil on paper…whatever you want. Tell us a good story with eye-popping visuals!

To celebrate our Horsham District and the Year of Culture, there will be a special award given on the night to the film from any category, which we feel best showcases the district. So get out there, make use of all there is around us and produce your film! Please do NOT enter this category if you did NOT film in the Horsham District!

In 2019 we offered up physical awards plus £7000 worth of prizes amongst the 10 winning filmmakers.

Prizes will be non-monetary (examples include vouchers, camera kit etc), Silvertip Films reserve the right to adjust prizes and content to their discretion. You will receive no cash prize from Silvertip Films

We will be offering wide variety of prizes per category, as well as a different prize pool for the u18 category.

The winning film-makers will also be gaining wide coverage via local (and wider) press and magazine coverage. In 2019, the Awards Night and winners featured on the front page of 2 newspapers in West Sussex, plus 2 magazine features. We achieved online coverage reaching over 300,000 people.

Winners will also get coverage on the 'Horsham District Year of Culture 2019' various PR and media channels

To enter the Your District award, your film MUST be filmed within the Horsham District. Do tell us where when you enter!

Films must be 10 minutes maximum runtime

Each films’ director must register their intent to enter and be either part of the Under 18 category or the Over 18 category

If you are entering for an Under 18 entry - I.E you are a parent or guardian - please let us know as last year we initially missed some U18 entries as they were submitted by people older than 18 so came up in the O18 searches!

Your productions must not break any laws during filming! Be safe, be careful and be respectful.

You must obtain permission for all locations you film at and you must also obtain release consent forms from all actors and people involved in your film

Prizes awarded are per category, per film – not per group member. There are no duplicate prizes for winning films with multiple crew members.

All prizes are final, there are no cash prize alternatives.

By signing up to the film festival, you agree that clips / stills from your film may be used for event promotional material, as well as being used at the film festival awards ceremony.

    Response from festival:

Thank you for entering and for coming to the Awards Night! Great to meet the maker of a great short film.

Fantastic festival, it really did have the red carpet rolled out for the evening! The whole event was very well produced, from the presenters (all glammed up!) to the interviews which were filmed (on and off stage). Great for new film makers to showcase their short films and a privilege to have been able to host this at the Capitol in Horsham.

  • A lovely local festival run by a very welcoming and dedicated team who just love films! I also think it's great that the team allow free or reduced entry to younger and/or local filmmakers in Horsham or West Sussex district to boost local filmmaking talent and inspire the community. I was lucky to be shortlisted with my short film STICKS last year, and it ultimately won BEST COMEDY as well! Lots of lovely prizes up for grabs by various sponsors too, which does not happen often with new or local festivals. Definitely check them out and I would highly recommend.

As a winner of one of the prizes I am obviously a bit biased, however, congratulations should go to the organisers for putting together a very professional festival with some really good films. I believe that the festival will go from strength to strength.
