Figment
In Figment we follow artist Lieke Anna (35). Born and raised in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. She has a very good relationship with her mother, Jeanine.
On June 19, 2020, disaster struck mother Jeanine when she suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage while Lieke was sitting next to her on the couch. What follows are anxious and uncertain weeks of operations and complications. For a long time it stays unclear whether and how Jeanine will wake up. Slowly and painfully it becomes clear that the self-confident and independent woman she used to be has turned into a needy and dependent woman.
We witness the impact of this change in the parent-child relationship on Lieke. Is she still a daughter now that their bond has changed so much? What does this mean for her? How does she accept this new mom? What does it do with her own creative process as an artist? An inner search for her new ME. A film about the impact of brain injury on loved ones and about living loss.
Lieke: “My work as a photographic self-portrait artist is an incredibly important part of who I am. My artworks are like a diary to me. I process my feelings and thoughts in it and share stories about loss, grief, searching in life and uncertainties. This way of processing is also an important part of the film and will be reflected in the cinematic scenes where you get to know me better as a maker, as a daughter, as a main character.”

Lieke Anna is a storytelling artist from Breskens, a small fisherman's village in the South of the Netherlands, and is currently based in Tilburg. From there she adores to explore the world around her. She lives near a cute forest which makes for a quiet base from where she creates her conceptual photographs. She is a graduate of the School of Arts in Tilburg with a degree in Visual Communication and has been working as an artist ever since.
Telling stories through imagery, Lieke Anna explores the conceptual way of creating and storytelling through her work.
Creating from within, shining a light on the dark matters of life we tend to stay away from and evoking emotions of the viewer to show that this vulnerability is in fact a strength. She searches for the contrast in the fragility and strength of the humans.
She uses photography as a way to paint her reality into meaningful imagery.
Figment is her debut film as a documentary filmmaker.
'Figment' is a documentary that I never hoped to make. But the story chose me and I choose to share the story Because it's not just my story, but the story of many loved ones who are dealing with the impact of brain injury. This is taking place on the margins of society and may be taken out of it. I'm going to do that by making this documentary. As director and main character in the film 'Figmentk' it is my job to guarantee the story as well as to share it openly and honestly.
