Director Biography - Thomas Thorogood

In 2017, I saw Hitchcock's 'Rear Window' crudely projected on a living room wall with my school friends. The atmosphere was electrifying; there were laughs and gasps and screams. That moment showed me the true power of cinema. Two years on, I am a second year Geology student with a dream of becoming a director. My short films draw on my life as a young Christian; the ups and downs, the mundane, the extraordinary. I hope they might baffle, entertain and above all, tell stories worth telling!

Director Statement

'Homesickness' is a story of longing. Sam is a man with dreams and desires, but is too terrified to leave his house. There's a monster outside. Whether this monster is real or inside Sam's head is up to the viewer! I have often found it hard to put myself outside my comfort zone, and I tried to explore this theme when writing the script. A major stylistic influence was Damien Chazelle's 'Whiplash'. This inspired me to blend long steadicam takes with static locked-down shots to create shifts in mood and pace. 'Homesickness', in many ways, is a horror film. But by combining the eerie synthesizer music with techno-jazz, I tried to give it a playful touch. I am hugely grateful to Will and Chiara for acting; they brought so much to the project. Enjoy the film!
