Director Statement

This quote comes from a veteran who temporarily returned home from the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war. It is also the inspiration for the film *Home*.

Since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in 2022, social media has been flooded with information about the war. The prevalence of social media has allowed us to see content filmed by soldiers on the battlefield, experiencing the harsh realities of war. This has had a significant impact on me, someone who has always lived in a peaceful environment. Therefore, I decided to make an anti-war film, hoping that, as a filmmaker, I could make a small contribution to world peace. Hence, I created the script for *Home*. Although the inspiration came from the Russia-Ukraine war, I do not intend to blame any side for their actions. Instead, I want to condemn war itself. I created a "fantasy war" to symbolize all ongoing conflicts, to show the audience that war brings only pain, and that peace and family are what we should cherish.

The protagonist of this film, Rick, is introduced as a deserter. In the army, deserters are often considered disgraceful, but I want to elevate his character through the development of the film. I hope that by the end of the story, the audience will sympathize with Rick and develop anti-war sentiments, transforming him from a despised deserter into a hero who sacrifices himself for his family.

Rick's character also represents many innocent soldiers who have perished in wars. In videos, I have seen soldiers responding to their country's call to the front lines, and the helpless and sorrowful expressions of their families during farewells. In some wars, due to a lack of troops, forced conscription breaks up happy families. These are the pains and sufferings brought by war. Not only do vibrant lives fall on the smoke-filled battlefields, but happy families are also torn apart. I hope the audience can reflect on war through Rick's character.
