Holly Nicole Combs is a songwriter, writer, and producer based in Thibodaux, Louisiana, known for her distinctive approach to music video storytelling. Combining music with visual art, Holly’s work explores human relationships, identity, and social issues, often blending humor with darker themes to capture the complexities of the human experience. Her innovative style challenges traditional music video conventions, offering fresh perspectives on the genre.
Working alongside her husband, Dustin Robichaux—a skilled videographer, editor, and graphic designer—Holly has contributed to over 10 music video projects. One of her key videos, "Late Fees", won an award from the New York Nil Gallery and earned a nomination at the Beeston Film Festival, marking a major milestone in her growing recognition within the industry.
Born in Hickory, North Carolina, Holly’s childhood was shaped by frequent moves across the Southern U.S. From North Carolina to Florida to Mississippi, the constant relocations created instability, making it difficult for Holly, a shy child, to form lasting friendships. The emotional distance in her home, compounded by family conflicts, deepened her sense of isolation.
To cope, Holly turned inward, using music and her imagination as an escape. She often created imaginary movie trailers in her mind, though she didn’t yet see herself as an artist. These reflective moments later laid the foundation for her creative pursuits.
When her family settled in Jacksonville, Florida, Holly attended The Academy of Communications Technology (now Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology), where she began to explore her creative side. After high school, she attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Education. During this time, Holly continued to nurture her creativity, writing songs and penning a play, The Columbus Rumpus, to educate students about Columbus’s impact on Indigenous people.
After personal losses, including the end of her marriage and the death of her father, Holly turned to music as an emotional outlet. During this period, she met Dustin Robichaux, and together they began creating music videos that reflected Holly’s evolving artistic vision. Their first collaboration, #Hashtag, followed by 5000 Friends and Late Fees, marked the beginning of their creative partnership. These videos showcased Holly’s conceptual storytelling, paired with Dustin’s technical expertise, quickly gaining attention in the music video world.
Holly’s creative philosophy centers around the idea of “daring to be different,” a belief imparted to her by her father. This mindset has driven her to reject conventional methods in favor of work that feels fresh and authentic. In her music videos, Holly often blends humor with serious, even dark themes, exploring the complex relationship between light and darkness in human nature.
Humor plays a central role in her work. Having grown up in a home where humor helped her navigate difficult circumstances, Holly learned to use laughter as a survival tool. This sensibility is woven into her videos, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own lives—whether through lighthearted moments or more sobering realizations.
Holly’s upbringing has given her a deep sensitivity to human vulnerability. Her mother, raised by a paranoid schizophrenic, faced significant psychological challenges, which influenced Holly’s understanding of fragility and the need for connection. These themes of vulnerability, isolation, and the search for meaning run throughout her work. Through her music and videos, Holly invites viewers to confront their emotional complexities and develop empathy for others.
Holly is currently working on a music video for Bayou Lafourche, which addresses the exploitation of Louisiana’s bayou region by the sugar cane industry. The video will examine the legacy of this industry and its ongoing impact, offering a poignant commentary on both the past and present.
Looking ahead, Holly is eager to expand her creative horizons. While she remains passionate about music videos, she aspires to write screenplays and explore narrative filmmaking. With her unique storytelling abilities and emotional depth, Holly is excited to stretch her creative wings beyond music video production.
At her core, Holly Nicole Combs is a storyteller—through music, film, and written word. Her work is driven by a desire to explore the human condition, using humor, emotion, and visual art to offer new perspectives on life’s challenges. As she continues to evolve in her creative journey, Holly remains committed to breaking new ground and sharing stories that inspire, provoke thought, and encourage deeper reflection on the world we live in.
