Art has always been a touchy subject in my life. Growing up, my mother gave me the freedom to pursue the field, but no one else in my life did. They told me I was talented, but I wasn't being practical. That the dreams I had meant nothing in the real world. After that, I lost my passion for art for a while - until I was inspired by my boss to pursue art once again after I taught it to kids at my local Boys and Girls Club. I worked incredibly hard and got accepted into Pratt Institute which was my dream school when I was younger - I was happy and believed that my life would be easy now; I got into the school of my dreams with the passion from my childhood. But the thing is, I wasn't that same kid anymore. Art wasn't the same to me anymore. So, I adapted, looked into other avenues of art, and found film and writing. With film and writing, I've been able to explore stories in a way painting never allowed me. It wasn't an easy shift; I knew next to nothing about cameras and my first semester was an uphill battle of criticism. There were so many times I thought to myself, "Did I make the wrong decision?" I felt incredibly bad about my work but never stopped telling myself that the passion I have for film and writing is something special. I feel like I'm on an upward trajectory and I am hitting goals I never thought were possible when I first began, for example, writing 50+ pages of a screenplay all by myself. I hope to be able to make new connections and grow in my skills.
I contextualize. Then, I reconstruct it. I have the desire to create content based on the inner workings of my life and produce an adaptation to forms a connection with the audience. The films I love most present the audience with a fantasied depiction of real-life issues and that’s what I wish to do. I want to write and create stories that present an authentic view into the complexity of familial dynamics – lives with our families are never simple and neither should the stories that are shown on screen. Movies for me aren’t entirely make-believe creations, they’re seeds of truth that every writer, director, and actor has a connection with. You can imitate and create a falsified emotion, but the relationship one feels when their work has history is what I wish to be a part of. The art of storytelling is a big part of my life; it’s a way to look inside myself and process what I’m going through; and I want to make films that help people do the same.
