Director Biography - Demetrius Wren

Demetrius Wren received his BFA in filmmaking from Florida State University. He then moved to New York for his "unofficial grad school" which led him to learning craft via the work of a genius, Robert Wilson, and studying writing while assisting Steven Sater on the Broadway hit, "Spring Awakening." A non-profit offered to generously fund his first documentary which gave him the confidence to take on larger projects and also, a fully stamped passport.

He has since traveled the world uncovering and telling stories that have toured festivals and theaters globally. His unique perspective has also led to commissioned work by the United Nations Virtual Reality (UNVR), Google, Samsung, Phaidon Press, Discovery and BET.

(Writer/Creator's Statement)
The concept for Hicksters came to me while driving from New York to LA, at a gas station in the middle of the country. A woman with a thick drawl was telling the cashier how absolutely awful New York was and how she had no idea why any idiot would ever choose to live there. Coming from a handful of good years as a New Yorker, I
had a little chuckle to myself before she continued saying, "But the only place worse than New York is LA!" It took everything in me not to laugh out loud, knowing people from the coasts say the same things about middle and southern America on the reg.

I thought about my own life, straddling all of those places and loving my family from the
Middle East and the Mid-West, my in-laws in Georgia and Mississippi, my best friends from the inner city in Pittsburgh and my chosen community in New York and LA. I wanted to tell the story of how I was molded in all of these places, feeling so specifically American not in spite of, but because of, all this mixing.

These stories are a healing balm in an increasingly divisive time. Laughter, in all our bumbling, brings us together. When we only see the painful realities of today’s news cycle on loop, we can fully buy into the divisiveness and miss out on the beautiful love and connection that also exists within our borders. I believe comedy offers space for challenging discourse to take place in a light-hearted way. And, let's be real, this shit is entertaining.
