An established screenwriter and script doctor in his native Belgium (having been nominated for a Belgian Academy Award for Best Screenplay), Matthieu Reynaert started everything anew for his directing career with the self produced experimental shorts "The Last Mermaid" and "The First Women" screened at festivals around the globe. His first fiction short is a social drama and an lgbtq romance with heavy influence from horror movies, and a shocking twist. It had its first major screening at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
Like the song it takes its title from, Hey Joe is a story of violence. Its about the old case of male domination and how it cannot always be fought with reason. My heroines tragic destiny comes from an old anger and an everlasting blues. The premises of a love story are akin to the beginning of a social revolution to me. They're both moments where anything seems possible, the best and the worst.
