Her lost butterfly

Sourav Paul Datta always wanted to make films, for as long as he can remember. However, when time came to choose, he opted for a more stable career in engineering and landed a job. The bug of filmmaking, using the visual medium to tell stories, did not just go away. Eventually, he saved some money and started making short films. Both as a calling card and to tell all those stories that he had been itching to tell. That was in 2015. He began telling stories with a unique narrative in which death became a central theme over and over again. Some of his most talked about short films are Rupkothar Kahini – The Grandfather Paradox, and The Fourth Dimension. He names Akira Kurosawa, Frederico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman as his inspirations, and says his work has been greatly influenced by the films of Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Since he has never been formally trained in the art of filmmaking, over the years he collaborated with several professional filmmakers, to hone his craft, which resulted in the beautiful, poetic frames that can be seen in his films. Sourav Paul Datta is a director with a singular vision, who often chooses to put in his work as a cinematographer too, so as to give his vision a sharper edge.
