Juan José Cadotte is a Canadian-Mexican director currently earning an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in ‘Lobbying Through Storytelling’ through the University of British Columbia’s Interdisciplinary Studies Program. He has worked as an actor in various student projects from local UBC, to Vancouver Film School Thesis to larger productions such as National Geographic’s Hitler’s Last Stand. As a director this is his debut documentary project, later on working as an assistant director and camera operator in a marine protected area’s documentary ‘El Espíritu de Nuestro Mar’ (2024) - funded by various academic institutions including UBC.
My main inspirations are Werner Herzog and Spike Lee. I will never forget reading a line in an Anthony Lane’s review of ‘Da 5 Bloods’ (2020) for the New Yorker. Here, his description of the auteur brought light to exactly the kind of filmmaker I wanted to be; “Lee is never not a documentarian”. Given my area of studies ranging from representation from the margins, gender, race and sexuality, as well as themes of philosophical power, I always want the audience to consider their position in this world. I first met Brock Tully through a friend and was instantly impacted by his quirky handle-bar moustache and uplifting attitude. His story is one that inspires, moves and shows the power we have to make a difference in our lives. I hope you enjoy.
