Hans
For many years a man was held prisoner inside a stone house deep in the woods. He was cared for like a doll and fed like a beast by a mysterious carer. One day an unexpected event led to the man’s escape - the story follows him on his naive journey into the world to discover his freedom. This Herzogian no-budget modern fairytale was created by Alexander Lines and features Wayne Liversidge as ‘The Man’. Shot on the UK's South Downs and Brighton on the East Sussex coast.

Alexander works as an assistant kit technician in Film/TV. In his spare time he enjoys making his own ideas a reality. His informal shorts are characterised by small casts with zero budget and see solely him undertake all production crew roles - enjoying the challenges (and often freedom) this brings when compared to the more formalised way of working on sets as a small cog in a larger machine.
Making 'Hans' felt like a natural response to the global pandemic. A simple tale of a man locked away but one day escaping to experience a world he doesn't recognise. The film speaks to me differently each time I view it, the themes resonating in different ways and offering me glimmers as to why I wanted to put it on screen. I think it can work on a basic narrative level if that's all you wish to take from it - though there's definitely something for us all to learn when you delve beneath the obvious.
