Despite five years of experience in television and film production, Dylan St. Aubin has no creative filmmaking experience. He has only ever represented the budget, the deadlines, and the management of resources. This has never been enough for him - he's realized that now.
In pursuing a passion project while balancing his day job, he has made his first foray into independent filmmaking with Hand Standman (2021), for which he has written, shot, edited, mixed, and directed. It's his first time for everything.
He lives in Vancouver, BC.
Shot and produced in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia over the course of 2020/2021, Hand Standman is a neo-noir drama presented in black-and-white.
A character-driven film set against the backdrop of a sparsely-populated city, the story centers on a chaotic day in the life of a nervous entrepreneur. Using handheld filming methods and tight editing, the visuals of Hand Standman are rooted in the anxious experience of its protagonist - a shady antihero lured out of desperation to a criminal venture, and consumed by paranoid urgency.
The sound design of Hand Standman has been built from the ground-up using a comprehensive collection of sound effects and professionally-recorded voiceovers. A meticulous attention to detail has been paid to the soundscape, bringing our film to life. The soundtrack is brimming with traditional Jazz, giving the film its vintage atmosphere while it hurtles through contemporary story beats.
We hope you enjoy what you see, and what you hear.
