Director Biography - Sri Charan

Sri Charan is an Indian American writer/director/producer and the Founder of Aadhya Arts. He moved to the United States to pursue his Masters degree in Civil Engineering, at the University of Florida. During his time at college, Sri also began to pursue his creative interests by assisting local productions. Soon after graduating, he enrolled himself in an acting studio, along with managing his day job as an engineer. He wrote several original scenes for himself and fellow students, during the process of which we discovered his love for screenwriting.

In order to hone in on his screenwriting skills, Sri went on to working closely with some of the most successful Hollywood writers, following which he moved to Los Angeles to work at Sony Pictures Entertainment. During his stint at Sony Pictures, he started an initiative called the ‘Clean Slate Project’ - a step towards promoting education among underprivileged children in India, through the art of filmmaking - and won a grant, awarded by Sony Pictures themselves. ‘Akash’, Clean Slate’s foremost project went on to winning international acclaim and awards too.

Half & Half is Sri's directorial debut feature that he also wrote and produced. He is also co-producing his first Indian feature film in association with Aliwood entertainment, which is due to release in the summer of 2021.

Director Statement

The idea of Half & Half took birth when I was discovering a lot of valuable things about myself and this world in my spiritual journey. During that same phase of life, I was playing a sweepstakes game at my neighborhood grocery store (very spiritual of me!). All you need is the winning coupon to claim the one million dollar prize. The writer in me said, "what if a homeless person ends up finding the winning coupon in a trash can?". That's how the journey of Half & Half began.

It touches upon many burning topics of today's world - homelessness, mental health, religion, race, culture, capitalism, prejudice, police brutality, domestic violence, greed, hope (despite adversity) and the importance of letting go - all encompassed in a spiritual nutshell. The uniqueness of this film lies in the fact that there is virtually no dialog, except for a few words that we hear occasionally. I believe that human emotions are the most intense in silence. When we utter a word to express that emotion, we dilute the intensity of that emotion. When you become silent, you start to recognize that most of the sounds we make are superfluous to our already chaotic existence. This film is a sincere effort to portray that worldly cacophony through the lens of silence.

The main character, Adam, is homeless but optimistic with a childlike curiosity. He may not be an evolved being, but he has one important characteristic for growth - non-judgmental curiosity. He is a hero, but doesn't know how to spell the word. He is an inspiration, but the world ignores it. He is a seeker, but doesn't know it. He is, in one word, the infinite possibility in us that we all learned to ignore.
