Shaina Thomas is a proud Tulsa, Oklahoma native and debut author of Tulsa’s Legacy (2018) highlighting the Historic Black Wall Street, Greenwood District in which she grew up. In May 2024 of this year, Shaina completed her doctoral studies at Howard University in which she published her dissertation research on youth homelessness to empower students and families. She examined how diverse stakeholders identify and respond to youth experiencing housing instability. Inspired by her research, novels and art, Shaina wishes to merge film and educational policy - using powerful narratives to improve policy.
According to the National Center for Homeless Education (2022), there were more than 1.1 million students enrolled in American public schools experiencing housing instability before the pandemic. Sadly, this number has increased. With these students and families in mind, I wrote this short. It is my dream to continue to use narratives as a powerful tool to arm families with information and representation across genres.
