Director Biography - Shaye Ellerbe

I am a filmmaker and performer from Charlotte, North Carolina. I grew up spending time with my family traveling and creating art with my Grandmother. Nostalgic times such as those contributed to the impact that the arts had on my life. From there, I attended after school programs with The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, where I fell in love with the aspect of telling stories.

When money got tight, I had to stop going. Therefore, in middle school, I joined the Theatre club. It was a magical time for me. In high school, I enrolled in an engineering program that I dreaded. However, I found the light at the end of the tunnel through the visual art class and the use of Imovie to create projects. I had to find outlets to let my creativity flow, and I was lucky enough to have a supportive mother. At that time, high school was like a slap in the face for me. I knew what I wanted to do, and it was not engineering. What I wanted to do was create film, theatre, and art.

While attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I quickly understood where my passions lie. I want to share stories, whether they are mine and give light to others’. Travel the world and explore the differences and similarities that various cultures have to my own. Create representation for women of color in a world that lacks it. Promote a positive body image through art. While also inspiring and encourage others to pursue their dreams and achieve the happiness that they owe to themselves.

When the world seemed to be crashing around me, the idea for HER. came along. HER. is a story about a troubled, abused, woman who seeks freedom and happiness. I wanted to create a film-themed around body image. However, I wanted to challenge myself to think outside of my comfort zone. In this case, my short film is about a woman who desperately seeks her freedom, gets it, but contemplates her decision.
