Director Statement

Addiction is a beast that preys upon its hosts. What brings a person to turn to drugs may be an underlying psychological distress caused by an event or a situation in their lives they cannot cope with. They might not be willing to seek immediate help or take advice to address these issues because they feel helpless and ashamed to confront their demons, to face their problems and themselves. Addiction can push a person so far down and stamp their free will with a sense of low self-worth. The addict may feel themselves a prisoner of circumstance, having to suffer the punishment they come to believe they deserve. HARRY dives deep down below the stereotypical labels of addiction and exposes vulnerability and humanity.

Simply making enough money to survive from day to day is not enough. Everything is becoming automated. Each part of the machine can be replaced. There is no room for expansion. The individual at the bottom of the chain feels lost and left behind. It is hard to lead an adequate life or to even make enough money to support a family by slaving away, working a bunch of low paying part-time jobs with slim to no benefits. It is the life of Sisyphus. What place does a person’s confidence and self-worth fit in this world where everything is expendable? The only place where flesh fits is through the grinding mechanism of the machine.

There is no sugar-coating it. The characters in HARRY are all flawed. They do not take responsibility for their actions. Each has good and bad qualities, dreams and aspirations, and they struggle mentally and physically to survive in a world that appears to not want them. They have no choice but to persist perchance to win in the end. They try their best to cope with their life choices and the consequences. At the centre of HARRY is love and compassion holding every crack together.
