Director Biography - Matthew Butler-Hart

Matthew originally trained as an actor but slowly moved over to filmmaking, forming Fizz and Ginger Films in 2009, before becoming a fulltime director, writer and producer in 2013. That was the year that Screen International picked him as one of their 'Stars of Tomorrow'. Since then he has directed and produced four feature films where he co-wrote the screenplay, and produced for other filmmakers including Aki Omoshaybi on his debut feature REAL.

His recent feature, Infinitum: Subject Unknown (with Ian McKellen), was released in U.S cinemas and has now been sold to almost every country in the world. He also co-wrote a best-selling book on indie filmmaking, Full To The Brim With Fizz, Ginger, and Fierce Determination.

Director Statement

When I was asked to come on board and work with a brand new writer on what would be a fairly complicated idea for a short film, I jumped at the chance. Making a short film is an artform all in itself and entirely different to how you would approach a feature film - and to have one unfold in limited locations with so many characters and strands of stories intertwining all in twenty minutes was an exciting prospect for a director. It was a very layered story that relied on events of the past fuelling what we were seeing, so we all had to work hard in finding ways to communicate these tiny stories visually, and very quickly. I think what we've come up with is an intricate, heart-felt look at a group of young people trying to deal with the loss of a close friend that ultimately ends with hope - it's something that all of us will have to deal with at some point in our lives, and this was a great way to explore that.
