My name is Matthew Charles. I am a Black, disabled storyteller with over a decade years of experience writing for the video game, TTRPG, film, and television industries. Born in Atlanta, and raised in snowy Minnesota, I came to California for Chapman University's film school program. Since then I've made short films, written for podcasts and video game cutscenes, published a D&D adventure, as well as created many film scripts and television pilots.
My goal is much the same as it was when I rode out of a Return of the Jedi screening on my father's shoulders at six. That movie ignited a fierce love of fantasy that has been nurtured by decades of other films, television shows, books, and video games. My aim as a writer has been to make real to others all the fantastic imaginings that excite and inspire me.
With age, my dream grew more specific. I want to share stories of heroes who overcame the impossible in the same way anime, and superhero comics helped me to cope with the limitations, and responsibilities of being diabetic. To populate magic kingdoms and deep space voyages with black and brown faces – the kind of wondrous characters I grew up surrounded by, that the world so easily ignores.
More than anything, I am a colorful man who wants to make the worlds of our fantasies just a bit more colorful as well.
