Working closely with directors, producers, and various heads of department, my ability to communicate cinematically and interpersonally has proved vital to the success of the projects I am involved with.
The first thing I do when I read or write a script is ask myself “is this a world that I want to inhabit and explore”. This film has a style of comedy rooted more in enduring discomfort as opposed to enjoying a joke. It is key in a film of this style to present a character that is likeable and the audience can empathize with, while also putting them into uncomfortable situations as an audience surrogate.
Working heavily with the writer, the aim of the film was to deeper communicate the ups and the downs, the discomforts and the miscommunications of everyday life. Andy is not nihilistic nor uncaring, in fact he probably cares too much, but doesn’t know how to properly express it. He does not blame his circumstances on a vague outside force, he blames the disconnection on himself.
