Director Statement

I have a deep passion for using film to shine light on stories and issues lost in time. I also love the idea of using American western genre tropes to tell an immigrant story. I remember growing up in school we only had one paragraph dedicated to working on the Canadian Railway followed by one sentence that talked about the hardships they endured. As a second generation immigrant that never sat right with me.

I want to use "Gold Rush" to show a glimpse in the time period and pay tribute to my ancestors who risked their lives for the railways we all benefit from today. Furthermore, I want explore the nuance relationships of prejudice and respect between immigrants from different countries working through the same struggle.

I grew up very inspired by filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa and Sergio Leone, especially in how they are able to deliver a compelling character study set in the past for the modern audience. Furthermore, I've reached out other local filmmakers in my circle to aid with the production including musician Inderveer Sodhi for the soundtrack and cinematographer Eugene Chok.
