"GenteStrana" (Atypical People) is a docu-film that recounts one of the many missions of the non-governmental organization CEFA.
Reporter Loris Bonetti will unfold two parallel stories: the one of the Tanzanian ten-year-old boy John Sagala, and the one of the young Italian Marco Rinoldi, sent to Africa to help the population of Njombe. John is the son of two cattle farmers who, due to the lack of skills and resources in the place where they live, are not able to manage and start up a company.Marco is also the son of a farmer, but his company is part of a large consortium in northern Italy. Marco has learned a lot growing up in that environment but, due to conflict he has with his father, he has no intention of succeeding him in the family business. Despite multiple difficulties, the arrival of Marco and other collaborators of Cefa in Tanzania will bring great benefit to John and his family. The two men will create a great bond that will last over time and that will make them both grow through exchanging values and skills.Through the reportage work with Marco and John, Loris will also find the previously lost part of himself, learning to accept the suffering that life has reserved for him and looking to the future with no regrets.

"Director's notes"

A humanitarian organization, an important Italian reality that operates silently and virtuously all over the world. Corners of the world made happy and independent thanks to the attention and care put into identifying human resources and local resources. Cefa is great and humble at thesame time. Like its operators. Normal people who perform actions accessible to all. Strange people in the eyes of a Tanzanian child. This documentary is a tribute to these men and women, normal yet so exceptional. Starting from the founder of the organization, Giovanni Bersani, who decided to make the emancipation of many possible thanks to his charisma, his strength, his enthusiasm and his faith. He decided it was possible. 50 years ago. The legacy he leaves us is great but not heavy: for the autonomy of peoples it is sufficient to observe a situation and seek its strength, resources, potential to be able to give them the necessary strength and finally sustainability. More than an inspiration, Cefa's ways of working and the results obtained generated in me a love at first sight which prompted me, through my main mean of expression which is the documentary, to fix an emblematic and representative story of all that I have seen and heard in their offices in Italy and around the world, in their archive footage, kindly donated to us for the story, and above all by meeting the people who keep this prodigious NGO alive. I tell the story of three lives and three ages: an adult man, a boy, a child. I tell their evolution. We start from a critical phase of the three. For different reasons and at different times, the three appear to be in difficulty: Loris was a great reporter, today he is a depressed and disheartened man who looks at the world with cynicism. Marco is a boy in difficulty in his relationship with his father who tries to find meaning in his life. John is a Tanzanian child who risks not having a good future ahead of him due to the poverty of his family. The three characters will live a parable, it is the story of their evolution. Through the story, using the narrative ploy of the documentary inside the mockumentary, reality merges with the reality of fiction in a story that grows through enthusiasm, personal and substantial difficulties, rediscovered security, in a direction of growth. Loris will rediscover the awareness of social commitment and with this will be able to restore meaning to his past life and consequently to his future one, Marco will restore the serenity of the family and John a better future. The story of the three protagonists is symbolically the story of Cefa. Loris is all of us, sometimes suspicious, closed, turned towards ourselves. Marco is Cefa, a young, normal life, with ups and downs, uncertainties and enthusiasms, curious and courageous in reaching out to others. John is the one who is supported and who in an endless exchange becomes the one who supports him. My personal interest in human rights makes me honored to be able to tell the commitment that CEFA has shown over 50 years of concrete initiatives and with excellent results.
