Gawai Home

Agan (a divorcee-father of two daughters, Syasha & Manin) is unable to return to the longhouse to celebrate Gawai as Manin is getting sick. Syasha mocks Manin about this, and Agan decides to give them chores to defuse the situation. As Syasha is cleaning, Manin watches a documentary on Miring & Ngajat. Manin asks Syasha to Ngajat but she doesn’t comply, leaving Agan to console a crying Manin and performs a mock miring to make Manin feel better. Agan has been trying to reach his ex-wife to no avail. Manin did not get better and a big fight between them breaks out. Each to their room, Syasha tries to contact her mother but realises that the mother doesn’t care. She realises that her family has always been there for her and should appreciate them. She puts on her Ngepan with the help of her father and they suprise Manin with a ngajat performance and celebrate Gawai the next morning. As they enjoy, knocks are heard on the door .

Director Statement

I think Gawai content rarely touches the nuances of a more broken family dynamic. It's mostly fun and togetherness but not everyone has that luxury of a functioning family to return to during festivities. I wanted to share that.
