Experiencing Interruptions?

Garden of Earthly Delights - Redux 3.0

In 1981 my friend and filmmaker Stan Brakhage created Garden of Earthly Delights, a collage film where he pasted petals, grasses and leaves, onto strips of clear 16mm film and was released at a later time on a 35mm film print.

After his death I was able to obtain a 35mm print of this film. I was never able to collaborate with Stan while he was alive but felt compelled to do a collaboration with him using this film, a way to honor his life, his art and our friendship.

Usuing alchemical and organic processes I started to work with Stan's film adding new layers.

I layered and wrapped the 35mm print with tree leaves from my yard and added some water, freezing, thawing and some extreme temperatures using fire plus lots of time to organically impress a new layer upon the Stan's original imagery.

Eventually this was scanned to digital and I did very little digital manipulation except for inverting the color, cropping and time re-mapping for my own cadence.

Of course there is the question of collaboration with an artist without their permission but I have no doubt Stan would be delighted with he outcome

Also, this particular film of Stan's was realeased on 35mm by the film board and hence there were lots of prints available. In no way did making this film hinder the availability of Stan's original film to the world.

I love to explore the edges of a form and medium, finding the cracks beneath the surface and the depth of the matrix that is this reality combined with the hidden sub-conscious mystery of the human mind/soul.
