GULMAHOMMAD

Gulmahommad was a Muslim Thief. In his early days he was caught wile stealing in a village and was beaten by the locals. To his rescue came forward an elderly Hindu widow from a well known family in that village. She gave Gulmahommad a place to stay beside a pond in her dates garden.She also instructed him that whatever he does, but never to do any wrong in her village. There after,Gulu (Gulmahommad) stayed in that village. But he never gave up stealing. Often he was caught and beaten , sometimes he ended up in the police lock up. Though he was a thief ,he had a gentle ,polite heart. Later some Hindu kids from that village named Ram,Fuko,Piku,Modhu,Vola became Gulu’s near and dear friends whenever he gets a chance, Gulu advised them to go and study ,and to be a good human.when the kids used to steal juice from date tree,he advised them when they drink juice in the odd hours of the day and became ill, Gulu explains them not to do so as its harmful to their health. Once when Gulu was caught and beaten ,one of the kids saw him.
Later when they asked Gulu the reason, he admits be a thief in his childhood after the death of his parents there was no one to take care and in bad association he became a thief. Once he was caught while stealing and enormously beaten and one of his legs got fractured. But even then he used war foot (long bamboo artificial legs) and traveled long distance overnight for stealing.The kids cry when they saw Gulu being beaten. When Gulu fell sick, these kids gets something from their home for Gulu to eat. In spite of being Muslim, Gulu used to listen to Hindu religious song . But somewhere there was a guilt feeling in Gulu. Seeing Gulmahommad tied & beaten, one of the kid starts vomiting and falls sick. Night he gets high fever and keeps saying “leave him. Don’t beat him.”This innocent love from the kids was the only gift in Gulu’s life. When Gulu falls tremendously ill his little friends get a doctor to see him.In his death bed, these kids promises Gulmahommad that they will study well and grow up as a good human being. Though Gulu was a thief his treading was always remembered by Ram means the writer Mr.Rammohan Kar. Who later in his life became a Government officer.
