Functioning
Logline - When it feels like life is falling through the cracks, you may find yourself functioning as a means to stay alive.
'Functioning' follows Lauren, a young, black, professional living with undiagnosed persistent depressive disorder*. Her symptoms of depression are less debilitating and less severe; she is considered High-Functioning.
She experiences a constant feeling of sadness, low self-esteem, and rejection yet to her coworkers, family, and followers, she appears to "have it all together". As a result, Lauren is unaware of her mental state or that she even has symptoms, until she is made aware by an unexpected observer.
*PDD, or dysthymia, is a continuous long-term (chronic) form of depression. You may lose interest in normal daily activities, feel hopeless, lack productivity, have low self-esteem, and have an overall feeling of inadequacy.

As a San Fernando Valley Native, entertainment has been a prominent background figure in Joia’s life. Writing, acting, and producing are her passions. “I love telling stories and want to see more honesty in film.”
For Joia, the pandemic resurrected a passion and desire for writing and filmmaking. She started Functioning in 2017 but was not able to complete it. After hearing and reading stories of close friends experiencing issues with mental health due to the SAH Order, Joia felt compelled to share her own experiences. 'Functioning' will be her directorial debut.
Let’s write the truth, even when it hurts.
