Director Statement

In my country, social and employment inequality devours families, trapping them in a cycle of poverty. It often feels like the more the hardworking and honest people try to improve their lives, the more unattainable it becomes. Many find themselves overwhelmed by endless bills and debts, trapped in a global system that appears to consume its members.

In Mexico, 4 out of every 10 people live in poverty, which corresponds to 55.7 million affected individuals, with an additional 10.9 million people living in extreme poverty.

Our children are in a vulnerable state, they are sadly exposed to the worst of human perversions. We could choose to close our hearts and remain indifferent, wait for institutions to solve it, explain it away as 'the way things have always been,' or simply express our condolences. However, if by chance, those on the other side of poverty could briefly see themselves in the shoes of their counterparts, I am sure their actions would help bridge the gap that gnaws at us.

'Fuereño' tells the story of Mario, a child whose opportunities slip away without him even realizing it. A child that circumstances force him to grow up fast and learn how to survive on the streets.
