Born and raised in the Northern California town of Sebastopol, Quinn Halleck has developed his early career as a mentee to Michael Bay and assistant within the studio system. Quinn got his start as a producer and director working on documentary projects for Peter Coyote and Jeremy Irons, taking him to Los Angeles in 2019 and becoming a freelance director.
When you are told the day you are going to die, you are presented with one question that haunts you each day until your last: what will I do in my final days? FROM WHERE IT HIDES is a lens into a world where death is negotiable. If you are willing to drive yourself to your limits in a gamble for your life, there is an opportunity to reclaim the opportunity to bargain your life back. The film focuses on a man carrying himself far beyond the boundary of civilization to the depths of an abandoned mineshaft where, inside, the physical form of Death is waiting. Rather than have his daughter watch him die quietly in a hospital bed, his love drives him to go through agony and back in exchange for a few last good years.
When we started to make FROM WHERE IT HIDES, death was something I had been wrestling to understand for a while. After having witnessed my closest friend lose their father to cancer at 18 years old, the thin fabric of life and death became incredibly relevant in my life. While their dad was taken by cancer in a hospital bed far from home, witnessing their moments together in his last weeks of life proved love at its most fundamental level. What he was willing to do in exchange for a few last good years was a lesson in family I’ll never forget.
This film was made over the past two years while working as Michael Bay's assistant and mentee. By quietly working in Bay's footsteps, I've been able to apply the skills and ethics he's taught me as a filmmaker towards this project.
Working on a near zero-dollar budget, this film is a culmination of my passion for both horror and the latest techniques in filmmaking. To do this, I was able to work with Alex Noble and bring his brilliant never-before-seen technique of UV makeup with neon lights effect to life. I’m excited to have been able to collaborate with Noble on a creature that is both stunning and horrifying.
