Director Statement

Friendly Fire is an experimental short film, shot on location in only two and a half hours during an outdoor military exhibition in Ireland. I used available light and ambient sound (yes, those are real tanks rumbling in the background!) and the two lead actors improvised the story without dialogue. The cameras were mostly handheld. This is an homage to the 'Dogme 95' style of naturalistic filming, which allowed the carefully-planned story to unfold organically. There is no music; rather, the rise and fall of gunfire and aircraft punctuates the story, and contrasts sharply with the silence of the two soldiers, who share a moment of calm in the midst of the chaos around them.
