Freedom to breathe : a child's right to breathe clean air
Nine out of ten children around the world are breathing in toxins that exceed safe levels which can interfere with critical stages of organ development in a child.
Access to clean air is recognized as a human right but to date has not been included among children’s rights as defined by the UNCRC.
The Freedom to breathe campaign, which is run by Blueair in partnership with Global Action Plan, the Coalition for Clean Air, Centre for Environment Education and Safekids Worldwide, began in 2021 and worked with partners across the world to deliver a curriculum linked education programme which empowered children to call for their right to clean air.
29,674 children from the UK, US, China, Cameroon and India demanded their right to clean air through the Freedom to breathe campaign.
Their calls were captured in this film.
The children were heard! In the draft of the General Comment on Children’s Rights and the Environment with a Special Focus on Climate Change (General Comment 26), the Committee has clarified that the ‘right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment’ includes the right of children to breathe clean air.
