The trails of Gabriel, Lucas, Luísa, and Yari have crossed in many ways and at different times. But the moment they all united happened in the first half of 2018, when they joined the same class in the Animation Cinema and Digital Arts undergraduate course at UFMG. Since then, the four artists have come together through their ambitions and references. Their union as a team emerged at the end of 2020 when they decided to start together the production of their graduation film the following year.
So, in the first semester of 2021, the team began developing a story that would soon prove impractical, so they discarded it very close to the first college deadline. However, their frustrated plans and the resulting challenge of coming up with a new idea turned out to be a starting point for reflections on the topic of art block — a much personal trouble at that moment but a universal one to creative professionals. That was the beginning of a script that would be born as their first project: the student short film Enquadro.
We have developed this story after our unsuccessful trials with a new idea for our college short film. It was Monday. The first assignment at the Animation Atelier was due in a week. We had just thrown out two months of work in a story, and we had talked the whole day before trying to think of something new worth producing, but nothing came to us.
But it was Monday, and we were a little desperate, feeling art blocked, with no good ideas at all — and then Lucas asked something like: what if we create a film about what we're going through? And that was our spark! We immediately started brainstorming ways to tell a compelling visual story about our experiences with art block.
We discussed where we think our struggles might come from, deep within our minds, and started from there. As we developed the script and the storyboards, we wanted the character's conflicts to become closer and closer to a possible origin for her art block. That way, we expect to guide the viewer through feelings and thoughts about this frequent creative anxiety — and the self-insecurities we can all experience eventually.
