Director Statement

"Fort Scratchley" is not just about crafting a suspenseful short film; it is a celebration of Newcastle’s rich cultural heritage and the spirit of its people. Growing up in Newcastle, I’ve always been captivated by the stories embedded in our city’s landmarks, and Fort Scratchley is one of the most iconic. This film is my attempt to contribute to a new cinematic folktale that resonates with both Novocastrians and audiences across Australia.

Drawing inspiration from historical events, "Fort Scratchley" uses the fort as a canvas to explore a part of Newcastle’s past that is often overlooked. By focusing on characters like Lily and Jo, two women on the fringes of wartime history, we seek to highlight those whose contributions may have been forgotten but are no less significant. Their story reflects the resilience and quiet strength that has always been a part of Newcastle’s identity.

We also want this film to be a platform for showcasing Newcastle's next generation of creatives. By utilizing the breathtaking aesthetics of the fort and the talent of local artists, we aim to amplify the voices that will shape the city's future. This is a story rooted in the past but told with the voices of the present, creating a bridge between the two.

At its core, "Fort Scratchley" is a Novocastrian story—unique, compelling, and deeply intertwined with the city’s cultural legacy. My hope is that this film will inspire Australians to engage with Newcastle and the many untold stories it holds, forging a deeper connection with our shared history and heritage.
