Director Biography - Pat Garrett

At heart, I'm a storyteller; someone who loves to entertain people.

That's what my company, Playscape Film, is all about, playing in filmic landscapes; enriching the lives of others through stories that leave audiences feeling content, thoughtful or full of wonder.

I've previously written two feature-length screenplays, which are yet to be produced; several short films and short stories; countless song lyrics; and more recently, my first science fiction novel.

While casting the talent for this project, I discovered something I hadn't realised: casting is half of directing.

Although I've edited a number of community television and corporate projects over the years, this was my first time producing and directing my own screenplay.

Director Statement

The purpose for making my first film, 'Forever,' is fourfold: it promotes some of Australia's amazing young acting talent; it provides an unheard cinematic voice; it tells an original story that's never been told before; and it provides an interesting metaphor for our human experience.

One of Playscape Film's primary goals is to promote the abilities of Australia's talented young actors, thereby helping to launch their creative careers. In casting 'Forever,' I found three fantastic actors, who will not only draw you deep into Steph's troubled world, but who will keep you pondering the reason for her time-trapped existence right till the end!

While I have written scripts and screenplays before, as private projects, or occasionally for others, 'Forever is the first of my projects to be produced. And as such, it now provides a novel cinematic voice, complete with a unique point-of-view, for public consumption.

'Forever' is an original mystery drama about a girl who's stuck in time! While several other films have shown characters stuck in exactly the same day, Steph is stuck on the same 'date,' but each morning is most definitely a very different day!! This unique situation allows countless possibilities for story and character development, along with an infinity of resolutions; hence the title: 'Forever.'

In a broader sense, this film is a metaphor for our everyday lives: how we feel 'stuck' from time to time. Steph's situation is a little different to what the rest of us may experience as years of monotonous repetition, where we do our 'day jobs' to pay the bills, while hoping for something more. But, although we all seek to escape our social prisons, Steph is 'literally' stuck in time! And because of this, we - the audience - are as keen to find out the truth as she is. Human curiosity is insatiable!
