Director Biography - Madelaine Moore

Madelaine is an award-winning Theatre and Screen Director, and Artistic Director of female-focussed theatre company, The Thelmas. She was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Sir Peter Hall Director’s Award. She was one of three Directors in the 2020/21 Old Vic 12 cohort, and has recently been awarded an MGCfutures Bursary to develop a radical adaptation of Aphra Behn’s Restoration comedy, The Rover.

Madelaine’s work is strongly informed by her interest in disrupting traditional gendered narratives and tackling big ideas through a feminist lens. She enjoys exploring themes of social justice and political issues in surprising and irreverent ways through playfulness with form, and drilling down into common tropes and subverting them. She works in two main areas; professional text-based theatre, and in participatory settings, particularly within the male prison estate.

Her debut short film ‘Twitching’ is currently receiving accolades on the International film festival circuit and won Best UK Film at Poppy Jasper IFF 2023. 'For Good Or Ill, Rain Shall Come’ is her second short film as Director. She will be beginning shooting in London for her third short ‘Awayday’ in October 2023.’

Theatre credits include: Gobble Gobble Gobble Gobble Goblin (Old Vic Theatre), Ladykiller (National Tour, Brits Off Broadway), Evelyn (Mercury Theatre, Southwark Playhouse), Algorithms (Soho Theatre, Netflix Stage to Screen Winner), Second Person Narrative (Arcola Theatre), The Awakening (Jack Studio), FATTY FAT FAT (Soho Theatre, Origins Award winner), Santi & Naz (VAULT, Origins Award winner)

Director Statement

As a female director, I am interested in telling stories that show the world through the eyes of women and centre their experiences. Our short folk horror film, 'For Good Or Ill', tells the story of May, a young woman, accused of witchcraft and awaiting trial. With her fate sealed by the community's fear and superstition, she turns to the power of nature as a source of strength and guidance.

I was really excited by the challenge of telling May's story, as stories of witchcraft, particularly during this period in history predominantly show the women in one of two ways; a malevolent spirit or a passive victim of misogyny and fear of powerful women. Here, through vivid and evocative imagery, we see the protagonist's journey evolve in a more nuanced way as she unearths an inner force in the face of imprisonment, allowing us to use May's discovery of supernatural powers to draw analogies with the struggle for autonomy and self-discovery in a world that attempts to limit and define women like May. With its striking visuals and thought-provoking themes in 'For Good Or Ill’, we hope that we have made an impactful short film that will leave audiences questioning the boundaries of society and the true meaning of power.
