Folegandros/Amore
Folegandros is a small Greek island, located in the middle of the Aegean Sea and difficult to reach. Inhabited almost exclusively by the local population (fishermen, farmers, shepherds), and buffeted all summer by the Meltemi wind, it has not yet become a favourite destination for tourists.
Milanese designers and architects Simone Ciarmoli and Miguel Queda discovered the island for the first time in 2006 and fell in love with it. They returned to the island often and won the affection of its inhabitants, so they decided to design and build Casa Azul, a white L-shaped holiday home that stands out against the blue sea.
In 2020, Simone Ciarmoli and Miguel Queda decided to make a work in homage to the island and its inhabitants, the true wealth of the place. So they produce a photographic book with the photographer Theo Vranas, entitled Amore/Folegandros.
Federico Fenucci's short film takes up the book and Vranas' photographs, analysing the archaic beauty of the faces that inhabit the island and the geographical and ethnographic change that seems to be looming inexorably over all Greek islands.
Produced during the Covid-19 pandemic, the director, together with the commissioning studio (Ciarmoli Queda Studio), decided to interview important curators and journalists (both Italian and non-Italian) to investigate their ideas about the book and the island, thus creating an alternating montage of landscapes, faces, sounds and photographs.

Born and raised in Milan, filmmaker Federico Fenucci graduated from the University of Milan having pursued a degree in Philosophy with a dissertation focused on violence.
After studying music from an early age, Federico worked as a session musician playing guitar and bass guitar in numerous gigs for renowned Italian artists, such as Cristiano Godano of Marlene Kuntz.
Introduced to film in his youth by his creative parents - a photographer and a stylist – he frequently collaborates with X Studio and various photographers realizing and shooting art and fashion videos.
His clients include Roncato, Best Company, Kate Cate, ELLE Serbia, Ciarmoli & Queda, Gabo Guzzo, Marieclaire.
Federico is currently distributing in festival circuit a documentary exploring the condition of women in Mexico (En Camino), and continues to develop and co-write projects with his sister Caterina, who studied Film and Creative Writing in the UK.
This film attempts to narrate the book Folegandros/Amore, a photographic project by Ciarmoli Queda Studio, which the two designers produced to try to share the enormous affection they feel for this rural Greek island and its inhabitants.
As you will see, the short film has a very simple structure because it was made during the lockdown period, so unfortunately we couldn't go to the island to shoot, and we had to find another form of narration. So we thought we would ask for the opinion of some journalists and design curators, whom we thank again for the interesting concepts and thoughts they shared with us.
I hope that in this way, those who have not been to the island will be able to say that they have experienced it anyway, at a time when travelling is quite difficult, and will perhaps be encouraged to go there in person as soon as they have the chance. Always with respect for these original places.
