I have just written and directed a short film called Fly-Tipping as part of my part-time MA at UWS. I currently work at UWS as the Studio Coordinator and I support the film & television undergraduates and postgraduates in their studies. The previous film I directed, The Class Photo (micro short) screened and won Café Flicker's Film of the Month in July 2023. My films come from a deep personal place and only really make it out into the world when they are bursting out of me. The Class Photo explores a traumatic, life-shaping moment in my childhood; Fly-Tipping (from a personal POV) is about my fear of parenthood; and Plaster (my next film) is about my acceptance of my own sexuality.
This film explores more than Margo and Sandy's emotions, it helped me reveal my fear of being a parent and allowed me a catharsis in that fear. I came out of the experience of making this film a different person with a different viewpoint on parenthood which, I think, is all I can ask of one of my films. I make them to explore ideas about the world and hopefully learn from them. I feel, from a personal place, that I have achieved this.
