Experiencing Interruptions?

Flashback

SYNOPSIS
Flashback, a shimmering disco dance oasis where sweat, sex, drugs, and fashion collided in a glittering spectacle.
Located in a small city notorious for its hostility towards queer people, Flashback defied the odds to become an international club sensation. The club survived police raids, violent thugs, and the devastating impact of AIDS, emerging as a beacon of resilience and joy.
Though Flashback is now long gone, its spirit lives on in every place where people fight for their right to be true to themselves.
Don’t Stop Dancing!

THE FILM
The producers, brothers Matthew and Peter Hays, spent many happy hours dancing at Flashback.
Over a soundtrack of two custom disco recordings sung by D’orjay - including the period club favourite So Many Men (So Little Time) - 3D graphics, archival photographs and footage take us back inside the famous venue and blend with re-enactments shot with today’s club kids in Edmonton’s last remaining gay bar. More than 30 key interviews tell the Flashback story in a compelling and inclusive way, in tribute to a place where young people could be who they were. All framed by the rediscovery, restoration and resurrection of the club's original blue neon sign.
We’re still dancing.

Director Statement

I started as a reporter in newspapers then TV news, and have been working in film and television for the past three decades. During the darks days of COVID I decided to start making films of my own ideas, through my company Tangerine Productions Ltd. This allows me to conceive and execute the films that I want to make, in the way I want to make them. It's quite wonderful.
This is my first feature film.
